What is a Vape Pen?
A vape pen is essentially three different components: a battery, a heating chamber, and a mouthpiece. The battery is where the power comes from and allows the entire vaporization process to happen. Batteries come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and deliver different levels of output. A heating chamber can be different depending on the type of thing being vaporized. In general, though, heating chambers always include some sort of heating element that is heated through the electric current. The mouthpiece is self-explanatory. In general, vape pens refer to a category of vaporizer that is thought to be slimmer, sleeker, and easier to conceal. This can come at the expense of an extraordinary power output but that doesn’t mean that vape pens are weak or don’t pack a punch.
Types of Vape Pens
Generally, vape pens, as mentioned above, cover the category of vaporizer that are thin, easy to conceal, and easy to use. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t variety. For example, the three major types of vape pen are dry herb, wax, and oil vape pens. Beyond that, the differences are too specific to brands or certain items that it’s best to review them individually.
Dry herb vape pens vaporize dry herb and are considered a nice alternative to having to worry about a glass piece as well as a lighter. Dry herb vape pens come with either a combustion or convection heating chamber. Combustion actually burns, not vaporizes, the dry herb. Convection uses hot air to vaporize the herb just like an oven would cook a turkey.
Wax vape pens are extremely popular considering that the option they’re replacing – a dab rig – is not conducive to quick smoke seshes and can be rather inconvenient, or even downright frightening, to use. Eschewing the traditional blowtorch and glass rig, a wax vape pen uses a battery and quartz or ceramic rods to heat and vaporize wax. In just a matter of minutes someone can get the same satisfaction without having to break out a blowtorch.
Oil vape pens are also super convenient and potent. The oil cartridge is a natural fit for a vape pen – it is a self-contained container of fluid that allows for a more efficient delivery system than most other methods. Oil vape pens have also been increasing in popularity with the proliferation of a lot more affordable, disposable oil cartridges that take the mess out of the situation.

How to Choose a Vape Pen?
Well, the best way to choose a vape pen is to list the specific things expected or needed from a vape pen. This is certainly going to vary from person to person but it’s the most important step – there is just too much merchandise out there available at the click of a button to simply shoot from the hip. Once the needs and specifications have been spelled out in terms of battery life, power, capacity, etc. it’s best to decide between beginner-friendly or expert level vape pens. It is also a good idea (and likely part of the first step) to determine if the vape pen needs to have a specific concentrate or be compatible with multiple. This could mean the difference between ensuring the purchases of a dry herb only vaporizer or a threaded, detachable oil cartridge vaporizer than can incorporate similarly threaded wax or dry herb cartridges. All in all, the most important aspect is going to be personal preferences.
Why Buy a Vape Pen?
The decision to buy a vape pen essentially comes down to: “do I have the money to buy the simplest vape pen available? Do I want to?”. Otherwise, there is nothing to really discuss. While there is no replacement for an excellent glass bowl, bong, or rig, it’s hard to argue that a vape pen isn’t a significant step up. No flame necessary, stable batteries, lasting battery life, and compatibility with various different concentrates and interchangeability means that a vape pen is likely the most powerful, most versatile smoking mechanism available on the market today.
