What are Wax Vaporizer Pens

Since their inception in 2009, wax vaporizers and the vaporizer industry, in general, have come a long way. While the manner in which these units function has more or less remained the same, the technology has become much more user-friendly and simple over the years. New features like advanced atomizers, variable voltage batteries, and better durability have made the latest generation of wax pen vapes more versatile, reliable, and powerful than ever before. Wax pen vaporizers are the fastest and easiest way to enjoy extracts and concentrates of all kinds on the go. Small enough to bring with you anywhere, wax pens allow you to discreetly medicate whenever you want.

In order to better understand wax pens and how they work, let us first take a look at how they function.

What is a Wax Atomizer?

Wax atomizers are what is used inside the popular wax vape pens to properly take a mobile dab from a pen. At the most basic level, a vape pen is a battery-powered device that is made up of four main parts: the tank, atomizer, sensors, and the battery. A dry herb vaporizer comes with all of the same components as most other variations of vape, and typically it comes with a cartridge with polyfill material or an interchangeable coil and wick system, where the concentrates can be loaded. It can also have a 510 threading system that fits pre-made cartridges of concentrate. Each of these parts works in harmony to heat the wax to the desired temperature.

There are other words used interchangeably with wax atomizers, making it confusing at times to discuss wax pens versus common e juice and concentrate pens. Some of these terms that are interchangeably used include a heating chamber, coil, heating element, and more. Basically, the atomizer is the mechanism that provides the heat for the concentrate or wax being used.

How to use Wax Atomizers?

Using a Wax Atomizer with a Box Mod

For a wax pen to work normally, the oils placed upon it should be liquid enough and the wax thin enough to where it can be heated to the appropriate temperature without combusting. If you regularly vape or dab at the wrong temperatures you could be wasting wax and missing out on much better tasting and more potent hits. Inside of the wax pen is the atomizer, a metal coil with a glass fiber or cotton wick system similar to those found inside of e-cigarettes. The liquid or wax is placed onto the coils and heated enough to where it combusts and vaporizes, which in turn allows for you to absorb the resulting product from the wick.

Most vaporizers for herbs come with what is called convection heating, where the air is heated around the material to cause it to vaporize; instead of conduction heating, where the material is directly placed onto a physical heating element to vaporize it completely. With convection, you obviously run a higher risk of burning and charring the material instead of vaporizing it, as it sits directly on top of the heating element with no buffer.

Unscrewing a pen's mouthpiece reveals the atomizer, which includes the chamber where the concentrate is placed. A dab tool is used to place wax on the tray or dish, being careful not to scrape or damage the coil during the loading process if it is exposed. Once loaded, replace the mouthpiece or screw and turn the unit on by clicking the power button five times, or however many your piece requires, consecutively. Inhale while pressing the power button (as this activates the heating coil) until the light heats up or until you are satisfied with the hit.

Wax atomizers are also used with box mods to create more power and bigger clouds. Using a wax attachment with your mod can make it more versatile than a majority of mods, and give you the option of using either regular e juice or your favorite concentrate. Most atomizers come with a 510-thread connector so that it can fit almost any model vaporizer, giving you more options to mix and match with different brands, materials, and coils without purchasing an entirely new vape.

How are Wax Atomizers Different from other Vape Pens?

The main difference in wax atomizer pens that burn very hot is the type of material they are built to burn, and the temperature capabilities the coils and batteries are able to produce and subsequently handle. One of the biggest complaints about early wax pens was the burnt and charred taste you would experience either after burning the hit or not cleaning the rig after a certain period of time, which could often be attributed to the leftover residue that is formed once the wax melts. This led to the recent introduction of higher quality materials like titanium coils and quartz crystal rods, which are much better at improving flavor and taste.

The main difference between a wax pen and a vape pen intended for nicotine consumption boils down to the material that you place upon it. They both function largely in the same way, but it is important to keep in mind that there are special dry herb vaporizers that are specifically made as a vape for flower and perform much better using them, while others do better with oils or concentrates. It all comes down to your preferences in the end.

Types of Wax Atomizers

When it comes to finding your ideal atomizer, it really boils down to your preferences as we mentioned. There are multiple types of atomizers that each brings with them their own unique pros and cons. Essentially, an atomizer is the most important part of a vape pen because it not only vaporizes but determines the flavor and thickness of the vapor. Atomizers are typically made of titanium, quartz, or ceramic, and each material produces distinguishable qualities that cater to a variety of vaping preferences and tastes.

Understanding the differences between the different vape pen atomizers may be confusing, but we've broken down the differences and made it easier for users to choose atomizers based on their style of vaping.

Glass Globe Atomizers

Types of Glass Globe Atomizers for Wax and Shatter

Glass Globe wax pens have always been given good reviews from customers and bloggers due to their simple ease of use with wax. The technological innovations have evolved the globe style dab pen to the level it is at today. With glass globe wax atomizer attachments or pens, you can simply load wax into the globe, and enjoy a dab hit. While they can be fragile and may be difficult to clean if left for too long, they are very easy to use and convenient wax atomizer options.

Magnetic Atomizers

Saber Vape Pen has Magnetic Wax Atomizers with Dual Quartz Coils

Magnetic vape pens are one of the most recent innovations in the wax pen industry and have helped solve some of its most redundant issues. Most pens break either due to a dead battery or clogged pieces. Magnetic style vape pens do not suffer from this fate because they can be disassembled and cleaned easily. The secret is that all of the pieces are magnetic and can be easily removed from one another, and critical junctures that are subject to clogging are much easier to reach.  Everyone is saying that the Saber Vape Pen is the best vape pen for wax on the vaporizer market.  It's heating elements are built with low-heat technology that allows you to vaporizer wax at lower, tastier heating levels.  The best part about owning this fully magnetic vape pen is that you'll never have to worry about threading issues again. All the vape parts snap on/off very smoothly and even the vape charger is magnetic.

Ceramic Wax Atomizer

Yocan Cerum is a Ceramic Wax Atomizer

Most early coiled atomizers are traditionally made from ceramic materials. Almost all early vape pen atomizers contained a ceramic cup with the traditional coils wrapped over wicks design. Recently, it changed to the coils still being in the ceramic cup but wrapped over ceramic rods instead of a wick. Coiled ceramic atomizers are known for big hits, but most users now prefer quartz bowls and rods rather than ceramic for coiled atomizers, as it's more efficient and also cleaner. Ceramic atomizers are known for causing residue to stick to the sides of the bowl, while quartz is much more resistant to residue buildup.

A titanium atomizer can come in multiple variations. The two most common types are coiled atomizers and non-coil atomizers. The main difference between these two styles is where the heat is supplied, as the latter receives heat from underneath the bowl. A coiled titanium atomizer typically heats and vaporizes essential oil very quickly, and also holds heat much more effectively as well. Coiled atomizers get hotter faster and generally reaches higher overall temperatures than their counterparts.

Ceramic pens are perfect for beginners and newcomers who are looking for a simple and easy to use vape option that will be durable and great tasting. Each wax pen comes with ceramic rod coils that will make your shatter or crumble taste warm and fresh. Here is a perfect example of a simple pen that utilizes a ceramic coil design.

Dual Coil Wax Atomizers

Dual Coil Quartz Atomizer for Wax

So what is the difference between single vs dual coil configuration? Is one better than another? The simplest way to explain this is that it all depends on your preferences, and although each has its own pros and cons, it all comes down to how you vape. Dual coil configuration works exactly the same way as a single coil configuration, the only difference is that the power is split between two coils instead of one. In other words, power is delivered to two separate coils, which transfer heat to the concentrate to vaporize it. Dual coil configuration typically produces a higher amount of vapor due to the increased surface area of the coils. The reason for that is the amount of contact area between e-juice and coils, which if larger will, in turn, create a larger cloud. The most commonly used types of double coils are quartz do to the more hardy and heat-retaining capabilities the material possesses.

Overall, dual coil configurations tend to deliver the same amount of vapor in a shorter time, so if you rip your vape for the same amount of time after installing dual coils you will get much bigger clouds. This type of design is better for more seasoned vapers who want larger clouds. This design is only for new vapers who enjoy taking shorter rips. While this may conserve battery power, it is not quite as practical for beginners. A perfect example of a handy dual coil vape is the Yocan Torch. This tool is a portable e nail that allows for easier dabs than ever.

Which are the Best Wax Atomizers

When caring for your atomizer, it is important to consistently clean out the inner tubes and pathways. Residue can quickly build up if using a coil design, and if left for too long then the coil can become less able to heat completely. The hits will become less flavorful, less potent, and smaller. The best atomizers we have come across are:

  1. Yocan Cerum
  2. Yocan NYX Wax Atomizer
  3. Saber Vape Wax Coils
  4. Yocan Evolve Plus XL Coils

What is a Dugout Pipe?

by Rory Edelson August 01, 2018

dugout pipe is one of the most popular and one of the least-understood things in any herbal enthusiast’s toolkit. They’re practical and portable, stylish and handy, inexpensive and even hip. dugout pipe refers to the whole rig which includes a variety of components which are contained in (and include) the dugout itself, a multi-chambered container. A dugout pipe usually opens at one end and holds a cigarette-style one-hitter pipe, a cleaning or scraping tool, and a bigger chamber to hold a supply of dry herbs, all in one handy kit.
