What is a "Sploof" and How Do You Use It?

Have you ever tried to have a discreet session, but you just can’t seem to clear the distinct smell of dry herbs afterward? Smoke can linger and instantly alert anyone nearby, or with a shared air vent, that you just toked. Opening a window is sometimes not enough to clear the scent, and burning incense is a dead giveaway that you’re trying to cover something up. That is why clever tokers created the sploof. Read on to learn how this simple device does wonders to clear the air after a smoke session.

What is a Sploof?

A sploof is a very basic tool that helps filter scent and smoke especially when vaping dry herbs. It is typically cylindrical in shape with holes on each end and is filled with perforated materials that smoke can dissipate through. The filling can range from common household items such as dryer sheets to more advanced activated charcoal filtration systems, all of which work to remove odor particles.

There are advanced sploofs on the market these days, such as Smokebuddy, which has an activated carbon filter. They cost around 50 dollars or more, but do wonders at eliminating the scent and smoke from an average session. You also have to replace the carbon filter periodically for these types of sploofs. The good news is that if you are on a budget then you will just need a few common materials to make a DIY sploof of your own.

How Do You Make A Sploof?

Since a sploof is typically a simple tube shape, a lot of common household items can be rigged into a sploof. This could be anything from an empty paper towel roll, cardboard toilet paper roll, to a plastic bottle with the bottom cut off. It all depends on what you have available and how long you want your homemade sploof to last. A plastic bottle is slightly more of a hassle to convert into a sploof, but will last much longer than an average cardboard tube sploof. However, size doesn’t matter when it comes to the length and width of the tube, so choose whatever you are most comfortable with placing your mouth on.

As with the tube structure, you have a variety of material options for building the rest of your sploof. You can choose between scented dryer sheets or activated charcoal for your sploof’s smoke filtering filling. And then you can choose between a rubber band, tape, or string to complete your homemade sploof. However, I have always stuck to the simple options of dryer sheets and rubber bands with a paper towel roll tube and it’s gotten the job done.

Once you have your materials gathered, there are three simple steps to follow to make your own sploof:

1. Take your cardboard tube and stuff it full of dryer sheets. Don’t be shy or stingy either, the more the better. However, you don’t want to pack it so tight that it will be difficult to exhale into. You want air to be able to flow through the tube still while being filtered by the dryer sheets.
2. Next, wrap a dryer sheet over one end of the cardboard tube filled with dryer sheets. It doesn’t really matter which end you choose, so don’t overthink it too much.
3. Secure this dryer sheet in place with a rubber band, so that it is attached tightly to one end of the tube. And ta-da! You have your very own homemade sploof!

If you opted for charcoal over dryer sheets though, you will basically follow the same steps above. You want to fill your tube with activated charcoal and then cover one end of the tube with a paper towel or dryer sheet. Secure this cover in place and you’re good to go! However, charcoal does arguably work better with a plastic bottle over a cardboard tube. Instead of cutting the bottom off the plastic bottle, you can poke holes in it so that charcoal doesn’t fall out of the bottle, but air can still pass through the sploof.

How Do You Use A Sploof?

Now that you have your homemade sploof assembled, it’s time to give it a go! You can choose any smoking method you prefer, whether it is with a pipe, bong, bubbler, chillum, dab rig, or vaporizer. However, joints or pre-rolls can be more difficult to use a sploof with, since smoke will still be coming out of the joint even when it is not being hit. It’s best to use a smoking technique where you can take a large inhale and exhale the smoke cleanly in one burst.

After you’ve filled your lungs, all you have to do to use a sploof is exhale through the open end of it. That’s it. Just put your mouth to the uncovered end of the cardboard tube or plastic bottle and exhale the smoke through the device. The dryer sheets or charcoal will then work to filter odor particles and other smoke particles out of your exhale before the air exits the other end of the sploof. The air that exits the sploof will contain less odor and heavy particles so that you are not exhaling a dank smelling smoke into the air. A simple sploof is a great way to cover up the stench of a good smoke session.
