How To Get More Vapor from Portable Vaporizers and Vape Pens

When you first start vaping, you'll notice that you're going through your dry herbs way too quickly. Then you'll start asking yourself, "How do I get more vapor from my vaporizer?" Read below how to get the best vapor production from your portable vaporizer for better performance.

Vaporizers have become incredibly popular, and for good reason: vaping is healthier than smoking and more efficient than combusting. However, to get the best results from your vaporizer, you need to follow a few important steps.

Whether you're using a high-end, true portable vaporizer or a less expensive vape pen, here's what you need to do to get the best vapor production from your vaporizer:

1. Dry your herbs

This one is very important. These devices are commonly called "dry herb vaporizers" for a reason, after all. You will get much more vapor production if your herbs are completely dried before you begin vaping.

In general, you want to buy dry herbs that are properly cured and dried to begin with for various reasons. However, if your herbs are not already dried, you can do so by following the steps below. While there are other methods and shortcuts you can take, the more time you take to properly dry your herbs, the more the herbs will retain their smoothness, flavor and aroma, and potency.

Depending on how wet your herbs are, you may need to perform one of these methods for several hours, overnight, or 1-2 days.

1. Glass Jar Method

Place your herbs inside a glass jar with the lid off. Place tissue both below and on top of the herbs. The tissues and glass jar will help prevent mold from forming (since the herbs are wet).

2. Paper or Plastic?

Both, actually. Start by placing your dry herbs in a brown paper bag for 6-8 hours. Then, remove the herbs and place them in a plastic bag for 5-7 hours. Alternate between these two while also lessening how much time you place the herbs in each bag. Alternating bags helps keep the moisture evenly throughout the plant (so that the outside doesn't dry faster than the center). Repeat as necessary.

3. Rice Method

Rice is commonly known to absorb moisture. Luckily, the same applies to your herbs. Place your wet herbs in a container with rice until all the moisture is absorbed--just be sure to pick off any remaining rice before use.

4. Oven Method (faster, but not preferred)

If you really need to dry your herbs in a pinch, you can get the job done using your oven. Spread the plants out evenly on a cookie sheet and tray and place them in the oven between 100 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit (no higher, or you may lose potency). Let them heat for about 10 minutes, then remove. If your herbs are still a little moist, turn them over and repeat for another 10 minutes.

If you have any other tips for drying your herbs, let us know in the comments!

2. Use an Herb Grinder to grind your dry herbs

Grinding herbs helps heat transfer between them more efficiently and effectively. This helps provide more even heating of your herbs and tobacco and can help with producing thicker clouds of vapor.

You may have many sharp tools and appliances laying around your kitchen that can help with grinding your herbs, but finding a nice herb grinder is probably the best way to go.

3. Pack tight, but not too much

This one sounds a little confusing at first, but bear with us. First and foremost, vapor is coming from the dry herbs. So, naturally, the more you pack, the more vapor your device will yield. However, different vaporizers have different designs--some of which require that you not over-pack the chamber. If you have a portable vaporizer where the airflow through the device could potentially be blocked by overpacking the chamber, then you want to be mindful of the delicate balance between packing tightly, but not overpacking.

Overpacking is more likely to be an issue if the heating chamber for your device is right below the mouthpiece. This type of design usually means that you're breathing all the vapor directly from the chamber, and the airflow from the chamber to the mouthpiece could get blocked by herbs. If the airflow is blocked, then the vapor is blocked, and you will not get the best hits you could be getting. For vaporizers where the heating chamber is at the bottom of the device (and the mouthpiece is at the top) tend to not suffer from this problem.

So, as long as you are not physically blocking airflow from the mouthpiece, then continue to pack and pack tightly. If your vaporizer has a mouthpiece that sits directly above the herbs, then just leave a bit of breathing room so that you can still inhale the vapor.

4. Inhale lightly and slowly

Speaking of inhaling, you want to make sure to inhale lightly and slowly. Going back to Tip 3, if your device's mouthpiece is directly above the dry herbs, then inhaling too forcefully will suck the herbs up to the filter and block airflow, preventing you from getting the most vapor from each hit.

But aside from airflow, inhaling slowly also keeps the heating chamber and dry herbs at the desired temperature. If you inhale too rapidly and too frequently, you may cool the chamber off, limiting how much vapor you get from each hit.

Finally, you have to remember that it takes time for the vapor to cook up. If you are constantly taking huge puffs, then you're getting a bit of vapor (that's been produced), and then a lot of excess air. A device can only produce so much vapor per second, and if you're taking in a lot of air, then you're not giving your vaporizer enough time to do its job. You will constantly be outpacing your vaporizer, and it will always be playing catch-up.

It's best to give the heating chamber time to heat up before you start taking hits, and pace the hits out appropriately if you're not getting enough vapor. While you could wait an even longer period of time in between hits and still take forceful, deep inhales, you're likely to get overwhelmed from breathing in too much vapor at once. It's definitely best to take small, slow, and steady puffs.

5. Use Glass Screens or Mesh Filters in your Vape Pen

Finally, if you're using a vape pen (one of the many vaporizer pens on the market that have exposed heating coils inside the chamber), you absolutely must use something to prevent direct contact between the heating coil and your herbs. Using glass screen filters are the most popular method to do the trick. Glass will not alter the flavor of your vapor and, most importantly, does not conduct electricity--so the glass screen won't run the risk of creating a short-circuit with the battery (something mesh filters have been known to do).

You can see our detailed tutorial on using glass screen filters here.

And you can purchase glass screen filters for your vape pens here.

So try these tips and techniques out and see if you get more vapor or better vapor from your portable vaporizers and vape pens. And if you have any tips of your own, please leave them in the comments.

Dry Herb Vaporizer Recommendations:

Apex dry herb vaporizer

Apex Vaporizer - only $79.95

The Apex vaporizer was one of the first true dry herb vaporizers sold in our store.  It's a great vape pen that won't let you down.  The stainless steel heating chamber holds a respectable amount of herbs and the vape heats up to your desired temperature setting within 45-90 seconds.  There are only three temperature settings to choose form.

Stoner Joe Dry Herb Vaporizer Kit

Stoner Joe Dry Herb Vaporizer - $99.99

The Stoner Joe Vaporizer Kit is definitely a step up from the Apex vaporizer.  It comes with a OLED screen that lets you set the temperature by the single digit.  Not only can you set the temperature very precisely, but it heat up within 30-45 seconds.  The last major difference is that the heating chamber is fully ceramic instead of stainless steel.

E-Clipse Vaporizer

E-Clipse Vaporizer - $139.99

The E-Clipse is by far the best dry herb vaporizer sold in our store.  It's super small, portable and heats up within 30-35 seconds. It has a built in ceramic heating chamber and the vaporizer kit comes with both a regular mouthpiece and a glass tube mouthpiece for better tasting vape hits.  Lastly, the batteries in the vaporizer device are top of the line LG batteries.  It's a higher price for a reason.  That being said, if you join our loyalty program and earn points before making a purchase, you'll get a $5-$10 discount (Depends on how many loyalty activities you do for us)

Flowermate-V5-pro-dry-herb-vaporizer

I have the kandy pen kvape dry herb vaporizer. I’ve tried it multiple times and I can’t seem to get a hit. When I let it heat up, then try to take a hit or inhale, nothing happens. I never blow out any smoke or anything. When I watch YouTube videos of other people using their kandy pen dry herb vaporizer, they are able to blow out lots of smoke on their exhale and I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong? Am I supposed to be able to exhale smoke like when I smoke a regular bowl of dry herb? Or is it not supposed to create any smoke at all? I’m going to try grinding my dry herb as fine as possible, but I’ve tried packing it tight and packing it loose and neither works. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated!

I put my herbs in a shoe box top and spread them out , breaking up the buds . Then I put the box top under a lamp . The herbs dry out nicely and it makes them very easy to grind . Any down side to this method .

Over time, there will be some build up—but, like you’ve pointed out, you can really reduce that by emptying the chamber and cleaning the device after every couple of uses. You can also remove the entire mouthpiece and filter to clean those parts as well. A q-tip and some isopropyl will work fine for the vapor path beneath the mouthpiece.

I use my transporter quite often. Will there be any buildup anywhere as long as I use my brush after each use? What about air (vapor) passages. How do I clean?
